Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

Apple uses it so you can fit twice as many photos on your phone. A 2MB HEIC looks the same as a 4MB JPG. You can disable it in Settings > Camera > Formats > 'Most Compatible', but you'll fill up memory sooner.

How do I open HEIC files on Windows 10/11?

Do I lose quality switching to JPG?
